Welcome to The Turner Family Page, which furnishes historical detail beyond the site index, exploring seven generations of Turners in the line of Henry Turner of Queensborough, Kent, England who immigrated to Dorchester Co. MD.

6. Sarah "Sally" Turner (Robinson) --The first wife of Solomon Robinson and mother of Annie Robinson Bland, Sally, the youngest of eleven children, was born ca.1833 (presumably in Caroline Co. MD) and married Solomon Robinson in Talbot Co, MD on July 12, 1848 at about age 15 (Maryland, Compiled Marriages, 1655-1850). After giving birth to a son, Thomas, in 1849 and a daughter, Annie, in 1852, Sally died (before Jan,18,1853) at the age of 19. It appears likely that she died from complications in childbirth with Annie. She appears as Sarah Robinson in the 1850 Talbot Co. MD census at age 17 (est. birth year 1833) with Solomon Robinson, age 25, and newborn Thomas. After her death, Solomon remarried Margaret A. Seymore (1813-1881) and had one further son named William Franklin Robinson (1853-1924). Sally's parents were Garretson Turner and Sarah "Sally" Gootee of Caroline Co., Maryland.

7. Garretson Turner --The father of Sally Turner Robinson, Garretson was born between 1785-90 in Caroline Co., MD, the second of six children. He married Sarah "Sally" Gootee (b.1790-94) on Jan.32,1812 in Caroline Co. and together they had the following 11 children: Zebediah (1813-1862), Zachariah (1815-1880), Maria (b.1819), Richard (1820-1846), Elizabeth McMahan Dean (1822-1889), Henry (1824-1848), William (1826-1907), Eliza Ann (b.1828), Mary Jane Mandrill Fleetwood (1829-1904), Margaret Ellen (1831-1846) and Sarah "Sally" Robinson (1833-1853). After Sally’s death in 1833, Garretson remarried Sarah Camper (b.1808) and had four more children before dying ca.1846. (Some family trees cite Garretson's birth and death dates as March 18, 1790-Oct.13, 1845 but I have found no sources for such exact dates.) From 1820 to 1840 he appears in District 3, of the Caroline Co., Maryland census. In the 1830 census his age is reported as 40-49, which suggests a birth date somewhat prior to 1790. Garretson is listed as having served as a private in Capt. Potter's 19th regiment of the Maryland militia (U.S., War of 1812 Service Records, 1812-1815). Garretson's parents were Thomas Turner and Ann "Nancy" Andrew.

8. Thomas Turner --The father of Garretson Turner, Thomas was born ca. 1760 and died ca. 1805 in Caroline County, MD. On April 26, 1781 he married Ann "Nancy" Andrew (1761-1839), daughter of Richard and Sarah Andrew (Marriage Licenses of Caroline County, Maryland, 1774-1815). It is thought that Nancy Andrew’s younger sister, whose first name is not known (Rhoda Andrew?), was Sally Turner’s maternal grandmother, the wife of Abel Gootee and mother of Sally Gootee Turner (Thomas’ daughter-in-law). Thomas had only one sibling, a sister named Margaret "Peggy" Turner and had at least three children: Garretson (b.ca.1790), Enoch (1796-1879), and Thomas (1800-1891). There is also a possible daughter named Lucrecia (1781-1825) who married Seth Prouse in Caroline Co. MD, but I haven't found any records which confirm her parents. In 1778 Thomas appears on the Choptank Hundred, Caroline Co. MD census as one who took the Fidelity Oath (Maryland, U.S., Compiled Census and Census Substitutes Index, 1772-1890). Thomas also appears in the 1790 and 1800 censuses for Caroline Co. MD. (There is a Thomas Turner listed as marrying Sally Spaklin in 1807 who also appears in the 1810 Caroline Co. MD census, but he is a younger person of the same name and might be Garretson's brother, Thomas, who was born in 1784 according to some sources). Thomas'  parents were Henry Turner and Sarah Murphy.

9. Henry (Smith) Turner Jr. ‑‑The father of Thomas Turner, Henry was born ca.1726 (possibly in  Frederick, Virginia) and died in Caroline Co. MD in 1797. His wife was Sarah Murphy, who was born in 1726 in Frederick, Virginia and died sometime after Dec.9, 1799 in Caroline Co., Maryland. Her parents were (John) Darby Murphy (born in 1695 in Cork, Ireland and died in 1768 in Frederick, Virginia) and Elizabeth Geary (born in 1695 in Frederick, Virginia and died there in 1769). Henry left a will dated Dec. 30, 1796 which names his son, Thomas, and three daughters: Leuritia Blades, Sally and Peggy Turner. Henry’s parents were Henry Turner (II) and Elizabeth Bonner.

10. Henry Turner Sr. ‑‑The father of Henry Turner Jr, Henry Sr. was born before 1706 and is described in court records as a planter. Sometime before 1721, he married Elizabeth Bonner (b.1705), daughter of Theodorus Bonner (1675-1717, died in Talbot Co. MD.) and his wife Rachel (d. after 1716 in Maryland). Theodorus' 1716 Talbot Co. will names his daughter as Elizabeth, a son as Theodorus (Jr.), and his wife as Rachel. (St. Peter's parish records in Easton also show a son named William Bonner as born in 1709.) Although unverified, some Ancestry.com trees show Theodorus’ parents as Henry Bonner (born in 1646 in St Nicholas Newcastle Upon Tyne Northumberland, England, died about 1702 in Charles Co. MD) and Elizabeth Taylor (born in 1642 in William and Mary Parish, Charles Co., MD; died Jun 1711 in Prince George's Co., MD), the daughter of James Taylor (b.1610). Immigration documents show Henry Bonner arrived in Maryland in 1669. Henry Turner had one sibling, a younger sister named Sarah. His parents were Thomas Turner and Elizabeth (Spencer?) of Dorchester Co. MD. Henry died in Dorchester Co. in 1746.

11. Thomas Turner (Sr.)‑‑The father of Henry Turner (II), Thomas was a planter in Dorcester Co. MD. He was born Sept.25, 1655 in Kent, England and died in 1679 in Maryland. Sometime before 1704, he married Elizabeth (died before Nov.1706), whose maiden name--possibly Spencer-- is not proven. (Records of the time indicate that she is probably the daughter of William and Isabell Spencer of Dorchester Co. MD.) Dorchester Co., MD Land Records (Lib. 6 old 91)
dated Nov. 1706 names Thomas' son as Henry Turner and also names his parents. Thomas’ parents were Henry Turner and Abigail Williams, who immigrated to Maryland from England.

12. Henry Turner ‑‑The father of Thomas Turner (Sr.), Henry was born in Queensborough, Kent, England, on Sept. 25, 1655, and on Aug.31,1674 married Abigail Williams, who (per Ancestry.com) was born in 1659 in London and died in 1709 in Dorchester Co. MD. LDS record state that she was christened May 10, 1660 at St. Botolph without Aldgate, England and was the daughter of Edward (1630-1665) and Abigail Williams (born in England in 1635 and died June 4, 1690 in Dorchester Co. MD). Henry Turner immigrated in 1671 and married Abigail before Aug. 1674 and had only one known child, Thomas. Henry died in Dorchester Co. MD ca. Oct, 1679 at age 24. This is documented in Caroline Co., MD records (Adm. Bonds. Lib. CC#A fol. 1) which states: "Abigall Turner and Benja. Hunt, bond for 310 lbs of Tobacca ...dated ye last day of October 1679. Abigall Turner, Adm 'x of Henry Turner, dec'd of Dorchester Co." Although unverified, some Ancestry.com trees list Thomas Turner (b.1636) of Yorkshire, England, son of William Turner, and Elizabeth Grayson (b.1640) as the parents of Henry Turner.
