Craver & Matthews Photo Album
Special thanks to Jean Vomastek Reyes and Vitorio Reyes for permission to share many of these photos from their collection.
A daguerreotype image (1840s-50s) which is thought to be Zachariah Craver (1800-1868)
Anne Weatherwax Craver (1800-1869), wife of Zachariah
(or possibly her daughter, Madgalene Craver, 1830-1880)
Zachariah Craver and Ann Weatherwax were
both born in West Sand Lake, Renseselaer Co., New York in 1800. Ann's parents were Lawrence and Anna Weatherwax and Zachariah's parents were David and Grace Craver. The family home of David's father, Johannes Craver (1730-1819), is pictured at right. Zachariah and Ann married in New York in 1818 and had 13 children together. Zacharia and his family moved to Fort Monroe, Virginia in the late 1830’s. Four of their children, Anna, Magdalene, David and Jefferson, settled on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Two sons, Monroe and Lawrence, settled in Baltimore, Maryland, while the other children settled in Virginia. At least two sons, Jefferson and Monroe, fought in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Monroe Craver was riding in Stonewall Jackson's company when Jackson was killed.
Mary Magdalene Craver (1830-1880)
wife of Johann Menck and mother of
Anna Menck Matthews
"David Craver "
Although Zachariah Craver's father was named
David Craver, he died in March 1842 at age 71.
As the first photography studios opened in the US in 1842, this is most likely Zachariah's son (Magdalene's
younger brother) David Craver (1833-1904).
Moses Monroe Craver (1837-1909) Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Craver (1841-after 1880)
Above: Monroe Craver and his wife Mary.
At left is George Keene with presumably
his wife. Her photo is labeled "Retta Craver,"
however George Keene's second wife was
named Angelina Craver (ca.1835-before 1891)
and this is likely Angelina, daughter of Zacharia
and Anne Craver. Angelina first married Fowler
Smith and, after his death in 1859, married
George Keene and moved to Philadelphia, PA.
Solomon Nicolas Matthews (1849-1934) Anna Dorothea Mënck Matthews (1860-1930)
daughter of Johann and Magdalene Craver Mënck
Solomon Matthews (full view) "Mr. & Mrs. Tom Matthews "
Although Solomon's parents were named Thomas and Matilda
Matthews , they died in the 1880s in their late 60's. As this photo
appears to be of a couple in their 40s and taken in the 1880s-90s, it
may be Solomon's brother, Thomas Henry Matthews (b.1845) & his wife.
