Welcome to The Dulin Family Page, which furnishes historical detail beyond the site index, exploring three generations of Dulins in the line of Joseph Duling Sr. of Talbot County, Maryland, as well as the related lines of Porter and Eubanks.

7. Margaret Dulin--Margaret was the mother of Hannah Matilda Troy and wife of Solomon Troy. Margaret was born on Dec.18, 1783 (per Troy Bible) and was the daughter of John and Hannah Dulin of  Talbot Co. MD. Margaret married Solomon Troy in Talbot Co. MD of Oct. 9, 1810 (Maryland, Compiled Marriages, 1655-1850). According to the Troy Family bible, Solomon and Margaret had nine children: Mary Ann (b.1811), William (b.1812), Margaret (b. 1813), Henry (b.1815), Hannah (b.1819), Huah (b.1821) and (another) Huah (b.1824). Margaret died on March 14, 1834. After her death, Solomon remarried Ann Keziah Pratt on Oct.6,1836, who bore one daughter, (Francis?) Ann Troy, in 1838, the mother dying a few days later. Solomon lived on to marry a third time; marriage records indicate that he married Mary Hennessy in 1840. Solomon died sometime after the 1850 census.

8. John Dulin -- The father of Margaret Dulin, John Dulin was born ca. 1765, probably in Talbot Co. MD. According to the Troy family Bible, his wife was named Hannah (surname not given), a name that was also given to her granddaughter, Hannah Matilda Troy. The 1790 Talbot Co. MD census shows "John Duling" in a household with 1 male under 16, 10 slaves, and 4 females, presumably his wife, Hannah, and 3 daughters. In the 1800 census we are given ages for the family of John Duling: John and Hannah are both age 25-44 (b. 1756-1775). They have 1 10-15 year old son and daughter and one daughter age 16-25 (probably 17 year old Margaret), and no slaves. By 1810 there is no John Dulin of the right age either in Talbot Co. census or anywhere in Maryland, so it is presumed that he died between 1801 and 1809The father of John Dulin Sr. is Joseph Duling and the father of John's wife, Hannah, is John Porter.
Note about John Dulin Jr.: The 1810 Talbot Co. census shows another John Dulin, age 16-25, as well as a female over 45 years old and 3 other free persons. The age of this John agrees with the 10-15 year old son in the household of John Dulin in 1800 and the female matches the age of the widow Hannah Duli, who died a few years later, as she does not appear in the 1820 census. This younger John Dulin in the 1810 census is likely John and Hannah's son, born between 1785-1794 (per the census) and likely the John Dulin shown in Talbot Co. records as marrying Mary Matthews on Oct.13, 1810,,shortly after the census was taken on Aug.6, 1810 (Maryland, Compiled Marriages, 1655-1850). In the 1820 Talbot Co. census John's household includes a 26-44 year old wife and a son and daughter under 10. After 1830, John no longer appears in any Maryland census which may imply his death before 1840. There is a July 21, 1846 Talbot Co. marriage between a John Dulin and Margaret Snow but this is likely a different younger John.

9. Joseph Duling -- The father of John Dulin Sr. Joseph was born ca. 1725 and died in 1783 in St. Michaels, Talbot Co., MD. He appears as Joseph Dowling n an early 1776 census in Talbot Co.  with the following household: Males: 1 over 50, 1 16-50, 1 under 16, Females: 0 over 50, 1 16-50, 1 under 16, Blacks: 1. This indicates that Joseph was born prior to 1726 and his wife was born after 1726. Joseph wrote his will on July 11, 1783 in Talbot Co. MD. In the will, he mentions his wife, Rebecca, his son, John Duling, and a grandson named John Bell. (Talbot. Probate Records 1668–1717, 1724–1746, 1777–1794 on FamilySearch)
A book by F. Edward Wright entitled Maryland Eastern Shore Vital Records 1776-1800 has a listing showing Rebecca Duling, age 40, died Nov.4, 1797; funeral Oct. 1799. This puts Rebecca's birth in 1757 and  shows that she is too young to be mother of John (b. ca.1765), so she is probably a second wife. There is a 1763 document mentioning
Joseph Duling and his wife Hester (Maryland. Probate Records 1763–1770 on FamilySearch), which appears to identify Joseph's first wife (and probably John's mother) as Hester, or possibly Esther. A 1775 will of Edward Eubanks is signed by his "nearest kin" Esther Duling and is also witnessed by Joseph Duling. (Maryland. Probate Records 1775–1776 on FamilySearch) This suggests that Joseph's first wife might be Esther Duling, a spelling variant of Hester Duling. In his 1769 will Edward Eubanks (a widower) names his three children: son Edward Jr. and his daughters, Easter and Lidey. He asks his friend James Barnwell to "take care of my two small children before named Easter and Lidey." If Easter Eubanks is a child in 1769 she cannot be Joseph's wife. On the other hand, the adult named Esther Duling--designated as Edward's nearest kin and probate co-signer with Joseph Duling--can be shown to be Edward's sister and Joseph's wife. Esther likely died a few years later, ca. 1777, allowing Joseph to remarry Rebecca prior to his death in 1783. A document on Ancestry.com dated 1736 names Thomas Eubanks, deceased, as the father of Edward Eubanks, also deceased, and names Edward's children and representatives as Edward Eubanks (Jr.) and Esther Eubanks.  (Maryland Death Records as Taken from Maryland Account Book compiled by Annie Walker Burns) This confirms Esther as the daughter of Edward Eubanks Sr., who is almost certainly the mother of John Dulin and wife of Joseph Duling.
There is a Talbot Co. marriage listing in 1740 for Henry Hendricks (b. Cecil Co. MD) marrying Esther Eubanks. (Maryland, U.S., Compiled Marriages, 1655-1850 on Ancestry.com) The 1762 will of Henry Hendrix shows that Henry and Esther had five children: Thomas (of age), Henry (19), Edward (14), Rachel (10), and Elisabeth. A further document from Oct 4, 1762 on Ancestry.com states that Esther, Henry's widow and administratrix, is now married to Joseph Duling. (Abstracts of the Administration Accounts of the Prerogative Court of Maryland Libers 46-51, 1760-1764. by V L. Skinner Jr.)  Thus widow Esther is documented as being remarried to Joseph Duling about a year or two before the birth of their son, John Dulin Sr., ca. 1765. The parents of Joseph Duling are unknown.  The further line of
Esther Eubanks is given below, as well as the further line of John Dulin's wife, Hannah Porter."

Early Dulins in Talbot Co. Maryland. According to a 1961 book by Roberta Dulin Stewart entitled  The Dulin Family in America, the earliest Dulin known to have lived in Talbot Co. MD was Hugh Dulin, who was brought to Maryland by Henry Bulin (Maryland Early Settlers Liber Q, p.29) around 1647 or 1657.

It was probably this same Hugh Dulin who left a will in Talbot Co. probated in 1680 and his wife Jane died and left a will the following year. As they did not mention any children in their will, they may have been childless. Stewart's book (p.11) relates a Family tradition offered by a Dulin descendant in Baltimore, MD named MacLee Othna Dulin, who states that "his Dulin ancestors were overseers on the estate of the Lloyds of London of Talbot County, and that they came to the Colonies in 1676. ...This was called Wye House, built about 1663...." Another early Dulin in Talbot Co. MD was John Dulin, who left a will probated in 1745, which names his wife Mary but mentioned no children.

St. Peter's Parish in Talbot Co. records the birth of a son named George on Aug. 22, 1723 to parents George and Elizabeth Duly. On March 31, 1728, a son named James is born to George and Elizabeth Dulin (Maryland, U.S., Births and Christenings Index, 1662-1911). They are probably the same couple whose name was spelled Duly five years earlier in the same record. If so, then George and James Dulin are brothers. Listed in the Maryland Militia in Talbot Co. MD in 1748 are Francis, George and Joseph Duling, as well as James Duling in 1781. The 1776 Talbot Co. census shows a Joseph Dewling and a William Dewling living in the Mill Hundred area of Talbot Co. MD. Maryland Testamentary Proceedings (Book 45, folio 336) lists three Dulings of Talbot Co. MD in 1774: Elijah, Francis and Joseph Duling. Based on this limited information, George and Elizabeth Dulin, may be the best candidate for the parents of Joseph Duling, and if so, George Jr. and James Dulin could be Joseph's brothers, as they were both born within a few years of Joseph's birth.

PORTER

8. Hannah Porter, the mother of Margaret Dulin Troy, was born ca. 1765 in Talbot Co. MD.  She married John Dulin ca. 1782 and had at least two children with him: Margaret Dulin, who married Solomon Troy, and John Dulin Jr. Hannah died on March 14, 1834, according to the Troy family bible. Her father was John Porter and her mother is uncertain.

9. John Porter, the father of Hannah Porter Dulin, was born in Talbot Co. MD ca.1735. He married Lydia Kinnannon in Caroline Co. MD on Oct. 3, 1774 (Caroline County, Maryland Marriages, 1774-1815). The Jan.27, 1791 probate for John Porter of Talbot Co. MD (Talbot. Probate Records 1788–1813, 1817–1821 on FamilySearch) leaves a significant portion of John's estate to his widow Lydia Porter and names all of their known children:
William Porter, John Porter,  Philemon Porter, Nathan Porter,  Perry Porter,  Hannah Porter ("daughter, now married to John Dulin"), Sarah Porter (married to James Dulin), Ann Porter (married to James Consident) and Neome Porter. The administrator is Thomas Porter, possibly a brother of John, whose relationship is not specified.
Since John married Lydia in 1774, she cannot be the mother of Hannah, who was born
ca. 1765 and gave birth to Margaret 18 years later in 1783.  Date-wise, the only candidate I have found for John's first wife in the Maryland marriage records is Margaret Baird, who married a John Porter on April 1, 1756 in Somerset Co., MD, according to a book by F. Edward Wright entitled Maryland Eastern Shore Vital Records 1751-1775. Two daughters are attributed to this marriage named Mary and Sarah. If Margaret Baird was Hannah's mother and she married John Porter in 1756, then John Porter and Margaret Baird must have been born at least as early as ca. 1738. Although we don't have a birth record for John Porter, the early census provides some evidence of his age. There are two John Porters of similar age listed in Talbot Co. MD in the 1776 census and they are both listed as no older than 50 years and therefore were born sometime after 1726. We have estimated our John Porter's birth at ca. 1735, which means that, date-wise, Margaret Baird could be the first wife of our John Porter and Hannah's mother, but without further evidence we cannot be certain. Another marriage of interest is the John Porter Jr. marriage to Susanna Davis on Feb. 7, 1740. This couple is very near the age we would expect for the parents of John (who might have been born as late as 1741). Military records indicate that one of these early John Porters served in the Talbot Co. Militia in 1748, possibly our John Porter (depending on when he was born).
The parents of John Porter are unknown. A number of trees on Ancestry.com list Philemon and Elizabeth Porter as John's parents, but I have not found evidence that would confirm this, other than the fact that John named a son Philemon, which suggests they may be closely related. The 1745 will of Philemon Porter names his wife Elizabeth and only two daughters, Rachel and Lucy, and no sons. (Maryland, U.S., Wills and Probate Records, 1635-1777)

EUBANKS

9. Esther Eubanks, the mother of John Dulin and wife of Joseph Duling. She was born ca. 1720 and married Henry Hendricks in 1739 and had several children prior to his Henry's death in 1762. Esther remarried Joseph Duling soon thereafter and gave birth to John Dulin ca, 1765. Esther died ca. 1776, after which Joseph Duling remarried Rebecca (surname unknown). Esther's parents were Edward and Elizabeth Eubanks.

10. Edward Eubanks, the father of
Esther Eubanks Dulin, was born in Talbot Co. MD in 1687. He married Elizabeth (surname unknown-possibly Walker) around 1719 and together they had three known children, Edward Jr., Esther (b. 1720) and Lidey. Little is known about his life. Edward Eubanks died around 1734. A document called Maryland death records as taken from Maryland account book no. 15 : dated 1736 to 1737 on Ancestry.com informs us about the family of Thomas Eubanks, recently deceased saying: "Edward Eubanks and Esther Eubanks, children and representatives of Edward Eubanks, deceased, who was the son of the said Thomas, deceased." Edward's widow, Elizabeth lived on until 1766 when she wrote her will which mentions her son Edward Jr. and her grandson, Henry Hendricks Jr. son of Henry Hendricks Sr., thee elder Henry being the first husband of her daughter, Esther. (Maryland, U.S., Wills and Probate Records, 1635-1777).  The parents of Edward Eubanks were Thomas and Martha Eubanks, who are thought to have immigrated to Maryland from England.

11. Thomas Eubanks, the father of Edward Eubanks, was born ca. 1650 probably in Lancaster, Lancashire, England. A 1675 passenger list shows a Thomas Ubanks arriving in Maryland. (U.S. and Canada, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s).  Thomas is thought to have married in Maryland not long after his arrival to a wife named
Martha (1654-1732), with whom he raised a large family. Some researchers believe Martha was the daughter of Marmaduke Harrison and his wife Ursula Bramley (who immigrated to Maryland from Lincolnshire, England), but I have not found a marriage license or other evidence that would confirm this. Talbot Co. Quaker meeting recordse establish that the Eubanks were Quakers. Thomas Eubanks wrote his will in Sept 22, 1732. In it he names his wife, Martha and three sons: Edward (1687-1734), George (1679-1740), Adam (1695-1740) as well as three grandsons: Morton, Richard and John Eubanks. There are many of his children who are not cited in the will, most having died before 1732. There are no daughters mentioned in will but other contemporary documents provide the names of other daughters and sons: Mary Story (1683-1729), husband Frank Story, Lydia Oswald (1692-1723), husband Edward Oswell, Margaret Price, husband John Price, Martha Edes (1694-1729), husband John Edes, Phelia (Phyllis) Brascrop (b. 1700), husband John Brascrop, and Elizabeth Perkins (1703-1729), husband Edward Perkins. Three other sons are: Thomas Eubanks Jr. (1688-1717--he identifies Thomas Sr. as his father in his 1717 will), Richard Eubanks (1689-1718), and William Eubanks (1685-1736).
The parents of Thomas Eubanks Sr. are not known with certainty. Many trees on Ancestry.com list a Thomas Eubanks (or Hughbanks) and Margaret Walker of Middlesex, England but I have not found sufficient evidence to establish them as Thomas' parents.
