Welcome to The Dulin Family Page, which furnishes historical detail beyond the site index, exploring two generations of Dulins in the line of John Dulin Sr. of Talbot County, Maryland.

7. Margaret Dulin--Margaret was the mother of Hannah Matilda Troy and wife of Solomon Troy. Margaret was born on Dec.18, 1783 (per Troy Bible) and was the daughter of John and Hannah Dulin of  Talbot Co. MD. Margaret married Solomon Troy in Talbot Co. MD of Oct. 9, 1810 (Maryland, Compiled Marriages, 1655-1850). According to the Troy Family bible, Solomon and Margaret had nine children: Mary Ann (b.1811), William (b.1812), Margaret (b. 1813), Henry (b.1815), Hannah (b.1819), Huah (b.1821) and (another) Huah (b.1824). Margaret died on March 14, 1834. After her death, Solomon remarried Ann Keziah Pratt on Oct.6,1836, who bore one daughter, (Francis?) Ann Troy, in 1838, the mother dying a few days later. Solomon lived on to marry a third time; marriage records indicate that he married Mary Hennessy in 1840. Solomon died sometime after the 1850 census.

8. John Dulin -- The father of Margaret Dulin, John Dulin was born ca. 1765, probably in Talbot Co. MD. According to the Troy family Bible, his wife was named Hannah (surname unknown), a name that was also given to her granddaughter, Hannah Matilda Troy. The 1790 Talbot Co. MD census shows "John Duling" in a household with 1 male under 16, 10 slaves, and 4 females, presumably his wife, Hannah, and 3 daughters. In the 1800 census we are given ages for the family of John Duling: John and Hannah are both age 25-44 (b. 1756-1775). They have 1 10-15 year old son and daughter and one daughter age 16-25 (probably 17 year old Margaret), and no slaves. By 1810 there is no John Dulin of the right age either in Talbot Co. census or anywhere in Maryland, so it is presumed that he died between 1801 and 1809The 1810 Talbot Co. census shows another John Dulen, age 16-25, as well as a female over 45 years old and 3 other free persons. The age of this John agrees with the 10-15 year old son in the household of John Dulin in 1800 and the female matches the age of the widow Hannah Dulin. Hannah likely died not long after this as she does not appear in the 1820 census.  Most likely this is John Dulin Jr., John and Hannah's son, born per the census between 1785-1794. Talbot Co. records show the marriage of John Dulin and Mary Matthews in Oct.13, 1810,,shortly after the census was taken on Aug.6, 1810 (Maryland, Compiled Marriages, 1655-1850). In the 1820 Talbot Co. census John's household includes a 26-44 year old wife and a son and daughter under 10. After 1830, John no longer appears in any Maryland census which may imply his death before 1840. There is a July 21, 1846 Talbot Co. marriage between a John Dulin and Margaret Snow but this is likely a different younger John. The parents of John Dulin Sr. and his wife Hannah are unknown.

Early Dulins in Talbot Co. Maryland. According to a 1961 book by Roberta Dulin Stewart entitled  The Dulin Family in America, the earliest Dulin known to have lived in Talbot Co. MD was Hugh Dulin, who was brought to Maryland by Henry Bulin (Maryland Early Settlers Liber Q, p.29) around 1647 or 1657.

It was probably this same Hugh Dulin who left a will in Talbot Co. probated in 1680 and his wife Jane died and left a will the following year. As they did not mention any children in their will, they may have been childless. Stewart's book (p.11) relates a Family tradition offered by a Dulin descendant in Baltimore, MD named MacLee Othna Dulin, who states that "his Dulin ancestors were overseers on the estate of the Lloyds of London of Talbot County, and that they came to the Colonies in 1676. ...This was called Wye House, built about 1663...." Another early Dulin in Talbot Co. MD was John Dulin, who left a will probated in 1745, which names his wife Mary but mentioned no children.

St. Peter's Parish in Talbot Co. records the birth of a son named George on Aug. 22, 1723 to parents George and Elizabeth Duly. On March 31, 1728, a son named James is born to George and Elizabeth Dulin (Maryland, U.S., Births and Christenings Index, 1662-1911). They are probably the same couple whose name was spelled Duly five years earlier in the same record. If so, then George and James Dulin are brothers. Listed in the Maryland Militia in Talbot Co. MD in 1748 are Francis, George and Joseph Duling, as well as James Duling in 1781. The 1776 Talbot Co. census shows a Joseph Dewling and a William Dewling living in the Mill Hundred area of Talbot Co. MD. Maryland Testamentary Proceedings (Book 45, folio 336) lists three Dulings of Talbot Co. MD in 1774: Elijah, Francis and Joseph Duling. An account book further lists the inventory of Francis Dulin of Talbot Co. and list the nearest of kin as Nathan and Elizabeth Deuley and administrator, Elijah Duling  (Maryland Account Books.Book 72,fol.56-57). A Francis Dulin appears in the Frederick Co. MD census in 1790 while the 1790  Talbot Co. census lists John Duling and Neily Duling (who appears to be a widow with 2 males under 16 and 5 females in the household--possibly a sister-in-law or  mother of John?). There is also a James Dolan in the 1790 census in Cecil Co. MD who could possibly be James Dulin (b.1728), the son of George and Elizabeth Dulin of Talbot Co., mentioned above, however the only James Dulin who appears in the 1800 Maryland census (in Caroline Co. MD) is only 26-44 years old (b. 1766-1774), too young to be born in 1728 but the right age to be a possible sibling of John. (James' 1790 household shows one male under 16, 1 male over 16 and three females.) The 1800 Talbot Co. MD census lists four Dulings: Abner, James, John and Adam. The first three are all age 26-44 (b. 1766-1774) while Adam's age is not given but he is listed below Abner (possibly his son). The 1810 Talbot Co. census lists Thomas Dulin and Reubin Dulen, while a Delahay Dulin is listed in nearby Caroline Co., MD, next to Abner Dulin (both born 1776-1784). The name Delahay is of interest since James Delahay is the next door neighbor of John Dulin in the 1800 Talbot Co. MD census, one of several Delahays living near John. This suggests the possibility that Hannah Dulin could be a Delahay, living near her relatives.

This James Delahay (III) was born in Talbot Co. MD ca. 1757 and married Stella Sewell in 1781, which makes him the right age to be a brother of Hannah (b. ca. 1765). He is also a DNA match to my line through his son Jesse Delahay. James' father (and possibly Hannah's) was likely James Delahay II, who was born ca. 1720 probably in Talbot Co. MD and died there ca. 1790. His wife was Mary Watts, who was born Nov.15, 1731 in Talbot Co. MD and died around 1780. Her parents were William Watts and Sarah Hawkins and the parents of James Delahay II were James Delahay I and Cornelia Formiller of Talbot Co. MD.

Summary: Census, land and tax records show a number of Dulins in Talbot and surrounding counties of Maryland in the 18th century, however there are few wills or other records to help identify family groups. Naming conventions as applied to the children of Solomon Troy and Margaret Dulin show their first son is named William and second son is Henry (who penned the genealogical information found in the Troy Bible). There is no early Henry Dulin in Maryland but there is a William Dulin who appears in the 1776 Talbot Co. MD census and then disappears from the records. This William Dulin would have been born around 1756 or earlier and may be the best candidate for a possible father of John Dulin.
