Kilmer Family Page
Welcome to The Kilmer Family Page, which furnishes historical detail beyond the site index, exploring three generations of Kilmers in the line of Johannes Jurrian (Georg) Kuelmer of Germany. On this page, we follow a double line involving two Kilmer brothers and their daughters, whose grandchildren (Zachariah Craver and Anne Weatherwax) married in New York in 1818. We also follow the line of Johann Henrich Funck of Hesso-Darmstadt, Germany, whose granddaughter, Elizabeth, married Simon Kilmer.
9. Marytje (Maria) Kilmer (Craver)-- The mother of David Craver and wife of Johannes Craver, Marytje (Maritze or Maria) Kilmer was born ca. 1732-7 in Germantown, Columbia Co., NY, an elder daughter in a family of 8-10 children. She was the daughter of Johannes Kilmer (b.1705), an immigrant to NY from Germany, and Anna Veronica Becker (b.1711). Maria’s date of death is uncertain but occurred after August, 1819 in Red Hook, Dutchess, New York. The old records show several spellings of David's Maria's name. In the Dutch Reformed Church records her name is given as: Marytje Nelme. In the marriage records (U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900) she is listed as Mariyze Kilmer, while in the Church records of the birth of David's brother, Heinrich, the parents are listed as Joh. Grover and Maritie Kulmer. Marytje (Maria) Kilmer is thought to be a distant cousin of Anna Milius Weatherwax, whose daughter, Ann, married David’s son, Zacharia Craver. Below we profile her younger cousin, Catherina.
9. Catharina Kilmer --An older cousin of Maria, Catharina was born ca. 1724 in Red Hook in Dutchess Co., New York. She was the likely mother of Anna Milius (Weatherwax)--who was the mother of Anne Weatherwax. Catharina married Johann Jacob Milius in NY in 1748 (U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900) and she was the fifth of fourteen children of Simon Kilmer (b.ca.1698) and Elisabetha Funck (b.1679) who immigrated from Germany. U.S., Dutch Reformed Church Records in Selected States, 1639-1989 documents the 1747 birth of Jacob Milius (Jr.), son of Jacob Milius (Sr.) and Catherine Kilmer, who is named as the daughter of Simon Kilmer (the handwritten name of the father looks like "Seime Kilmer"). The same Church records also document the baptism of Anna Milius (Weatherwax) on Nov.21, 1763 and lists the parents as Jacob Milius and Catherine Kilmer. Catherine died on June 5, 1787 and is buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Valatie, Columbia Co., New York (per Find-a-Grave.) I have 37 DNA matches to Catherine and her siblings, one at 44 cM which matches her brother, John William Kilmer (1750-1840).
10. Johannes Kilmer -- The father of Maria Kilmer Craver and son of Georg Kilmer, Johannes Kilmer was born ca.1700-5 in Germany, the ninth of eleven children. By 1731-2, he had come to Germantown, New York, where he married Anna Veronica Becker in 1732 (U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900). Anna Veronica was born in Oct. 10, 1711 in West Camp, Ulster, New York and died in 1751 in Germantown, Columbia, New York. She was the daughter of Johann Peter Becker (b.1680-8 in Niederbieber, Germany and died after 1711) and Anna Elisabetha Haas. Johann Peter's parents were Johannes Becker (c.1660-ca.1708) of Neuwald, Germany and Anna Barbara Greis (1664-1742). Germany, Select Births and Baptisms, 1558-1898 documents Johann Peter as their child and Germany, Select Deaths and Burials, 1582-1958 records the death of Anna Barbara, spouse of Johannes Becker, on April 1, 1742 in Altenkirchen (Ba. Homburg), Bayern, Germany. U.S., Dutch Reformed Church Records in Selected States, 1639-1989 shows Johannes Kilmer and "Anna Feronica Kilmerin" as the parents of "Wilm" (Wilhem or William) on June 22, 1746 in NY. Their first-born daughter, Maria (Marytje) Craver, was one of 8-10 children, including: Johannes, Wilhelm(us), Anna Margaret, Elizabetha, Catharina, and Gertraud.
10. Simon Kilmer -- The older brother of Johannes, and father of Catherine Kilmer (Milius), Simon was born on June 18, 1702 in Altengronau, Hessen, Germany. He was the eldest of eleven children of Georg and Anna Margaretha Kilmer. On January 13, 1720, he married Elisabeth(a) Funck of Donsbach or Medenbach, Hessen-Nassau, Prussia, Germany, the daughter of Peter Funck and Anna Juliana Gela Clemens (see below for more on the Funck family). Elizabeth was born November 24, 1697 in Donsbach Germany, and died ca.1749 in Red Hook, Dutchess County, New York. Simon and family appear to have immigrated to NY by 1724 when their daughter Catharina was born. New York, Genealogical Records, 1675-1920 lists Simon Killmore in the Northeast Precinct, Dutchess, NY in 1775 and U.S., Selected States Dutch Reformed Church Membership Records, 1701-1995 lists Simon as a member of the Gallatin, NY Dutch Reformed Church on May 21, 1780. On March 28, 1788 Simon died in Little Nine Partners, Dutchess Co, New York. The couple had the following children: Pieter, Adam, Agnes, Catharina, Christina, Elisabeth, Georg, Jacob, Johann Wilhelm, Johannes, Margaretha, Nicolass, and Simon Kilmer. The parents of Simon and his brother, Johannes, were Georg and Anna (Eva) Margaretha Kilmer.
11. Johannes Jurrian (Georg) Kuelmer --Georg Kilmer, or Johannes Jurrian Kuhlmann, was the father of Simon and Johannes Kilmer. He was born Jan.5, 1670 in Altengronau, Main-Kinzig-Kreis, Hesse, Germany and immigrated with his family to New York in 1710. New York records show that his wife was named Anna Margaretha (b. ca 1674 in Germany). She is called Eva Margaretha on some old lists. (We cannot be sure of her maiden name. Some sources suggest that Georg had a first wife named Eva Zirckel, who died in Germany in 1708, and in 1709, the year before he immigrated to America, he remarried Anna Margaretha Schleicher (surname not proven). Anna was born Nov. 26, 1671 in Germany and died in 1742/3 in Red Hook, New York. Her parents were Johannes and Anna Catharina Schleicher. After immigrating to America, Johannes changed his name from Johannes Kuhlmann to George Kilmer. Together, Georg and Anna (Eva) Margaretha had ten or eleven children, Simon being the eldest and Johannes being born a few years later. Georg and Anna immigrated to America with their children, arriving in New York in 1710. Georg died around 1730 in Red Hook, Dutchess, New York. Known children: Simon, Elizabeth, Johannes, Philip, George, Abraham, Anna Barbara, Catherina, Johann Wilhelm, and Heinrich (b.1727 in NY).
Notes: Georg Kilmer was also known as Hans Jury, Jurich John Georg and many other names. The spelling of the surname Kilmer was also Kuhlmann. George Kuhlmann/Kilmer made his first appearance on the Hunter Ration Lists of July 4, 1710, with 2 persons over 10 yrs of age and 3 persons under 10. He was recorded with 4 persons over 10 and 3 under 10 on Aug. 4, 1710, with 6 persons over 10 and 1 under 10 on June 24, 1712, and with 6 over 10 and 2 under 10 on Sept. 13, 1712. Jurich Kelmer was naturalized on Jan. 17, 1715/16. Georg Kolmer, with wife and children, were at Hessberg around 1716/17. The mark of Jury Coolmer was recorded on an old manuscript dated 1718/19 (Livingston Papers, Reel #4). Jury Coelmer/Coolmer was a Palatine Debtor in 1718, 1719, 1722 and 1726 (Livingston Debtors Lists).
Letter to Jennifer Matternes from Lawrence Rickard: "George Kuhlmann. The founder of the Hudson Valley Kilmer family was indeed Georg Kuhlmann/Kilmer. Some published genealogies relating to the family mistakenly give one Philipp Kilmer as the first generation in America; however, this non-existent Philipp came into being through a misreading of the emigrant Philip Helmer's name found on the West Camp Census of 1710/11. ...... Jurich Kelmer was naturalized 17 Jan 1715/16 (Albany Nats.). Hans Jury Kolemer was on the roll of the Independent Company of the Manor of Livingston (in Columbia County) 30 Nov 1715. ..... His wife was called Anna Margaretha in 1720 and Eva Margaretha in 1725 and 1728."
Some trees on Ancestry list the German parents of Johannes Georg Kilmer (Hans Jury) as Georg Kilmer II (1621-1706) and Catherina Millius (1650-1703), both of Altengronau, Main-Kinzig-Kreis, Hessen, Germany, and list Georg Kilmer II's German parents as Georg Kilmer I (b.1591) and Catherine (b.1597); however I have not found records which definitively confirm this.
FUNCK
10. Elisabeth Funck-- The wife of Simon Kilmer and mother of Catherine Kilmer Milius and Marytje Kilmer Craver, Elizabeth was born Nov. 24, 1697 in Donsbach Germany and died ca.1749 in Red Hook, Dutchess County, New York. She married Simon Kilmer in NY on January 13, 1720 and together they had 13 children. Elizabeth's parents were Peter J. Funck and Anna Juliana (sometimes called Gela) Clemens.

She was born in Jan. 29, 1680 in Dillenberg, Lahn-Dill-Kreis, Hessen, Germany and died before 1770 in Dutchess Co., New York. Anna Juliana's father was Hartman Clemens (1650-ca.1700) of Medenbach, Germany and her mother was named Elisabetha (1656-1697). Juliana's father is named in a 1684 marriage Bann for "Peter Funck, son of Johann Henrich Funck at Donsbach, and Juliana, daughter of Hartman Clemens from Medenbach (Dillenburg Chbk.),"a marriage that took place Jan. 29, 1695 (p.266, Hank Z. Jones, The Palentine Families of New York, vol.1). Vol 2 of The Palatine Families of New York" cites "baptism sponsors: Johan Valentin Funk from Donsbach and Elisabetha - wife of Hartmann Clemens, the Hofmann at Hirschberg." The U.S. and Canada, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s lists Peter Funck and Anna Juliana Clemens as immigrating to Colonial New York in 1710 with two daughters: Elizabetha and Anna Christina, having departed from Rotterdam in 1709. Also in this party was Anna Katarina Funck (alone), Peter's mother, who became a widow in 1703. Three more children were born in New York. Peter died after 1719 in Dutchess, New York, United States.
Johann Henrich Funck -- The father of Peter Funck, Johann was born in 1640 in Landgraviate of Hesso-Darmstadt, Germany and died March 10, 1703 in Altheim Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany. He married Anne Katarina Lengen (1643-1723) of Nassau, Deggendorf, Bayern, Germany. She immigrated to New York with her son, Peter, and his family. Johann and Katarina had three children: Gela (b.1666), Anna Catherina (b.1668) and Peter (b.1675).
